The park is situated in central Tanzania at about 130km west of Iringa. With an area of 20,226 km2 making it one of largest national parks we have in Africa. Ruaha has a high diversity of flora and fauna including endangered species like Elephants, wild dogs, southern ground hornbills etc. As it showcase its almost untouched and unexplored ecosystem. It’s one of the famous wilderness area where one can have a rare experience of game viewing.
Ruaha National Park has a bimodal pattern of rainforest. The short rainfall season begins in mid or late November to February while the long season is around March a April with an annual temperature of about 280c. The park experience its dry season at around June October with an annual temperature of about 350c
The park represents a transition zone where Eastern and Southern Africa species of flora and fauna overlap. It is currently said to have the largest population of elephants than any park in East Africa. Characterized with semi arid type of vegetation acacia trees and the magnificent Baobab trees. their over 1650 identified plant species. One of the only places to view the magnificent mammals like Kudu’s (Both greater and lesser) sable and Roan antelopes in the Miombo woodlands.
Ruaha National Park has a wide range of physical feature from the great rift valley, river systems, Natural springs, wetlands, Hot water springs, Kopjes and to the rolling hills and Mountains. The main river include the great Ruaha river, Mdonya , Mwagusi and Jongomero. The natural springs occuring in the park are associated with the western arc of the great rift valley escarpment
